Maritime information systems at the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA)
Lisbon-based European Maritime Safety Agency provides technical assistance and support to the European Commission and Member States in the implementation and development of European Union maritime safety and pollution legislation. In addition to the development and updating of legislation, it monitors its implementation and evaluates the effectiveness of the measures taken, with the aim of improving maritime safety and pollution prevention and control. This agency provides detailed, reliable and real-time information on what happens at sea to help government s and competent authorities effectively implement maritime policy measures to prevent future problems and accidents, contributing to improved safety in EU waters. In order to effectively fulfill its tasks, this organization was created in 2003 following the sinking of two oil tankers, first the “Erika” in 1999 off the French coast and then the “Prestige” in 2002 off the Spanish coast.
